We want to make both private boating run on clean and affordable natural gas/biogas and cut down on emissions caused by boating as it is today. Together with our partners we want to implement pioneering biogas fueling solutions on board boats as well as operate fueling stations around Finland.
With over 2M private boats in Finland alone, all fueled by either diesel or gasoline, we believe private boating isn’t as sustainable and environmentally-friendly as it could be. We want to disrupt the status quo and give boat enthusiasts a cost-efficient alternative that also cuts down emissions by 80% when opting for biogas instead of fossil-based diesel or gasoline. According to studies methane combustion produces 80% of the CO2 that gasoline/diesel does. To show the business case for operating a private boat on natural gas/biogas through analyzing the value chain of both getting the gas to the off-taker. Granted that the experiment is successful, showing a good business case, the case marina/city will be replicated on other marinas/cities in Finland.
With focus on implementing new technology that makes boats run on natural gas/biogas and connect boaters to the fuel through fueling solutions on the water and at marinas, we are giving boaters a more environmentally-friendly option. By simultaneously solving the challenges of operating marine engines on natural gas/biogas and making the fuel available to boaters, we will provide a practical solution that beats the prices of gasoline and diesel by a large margin as well as cuts CO2 emissions by 80%. This is an innovative approach that has not been explored in Finland before. The project would be done together with gas providers that have the capability to distribute natural gas/biogas, and with technology providers (for both fueling stations and boats) we will choose a case city or marina, map out the current ecosystems (off-takers, supply chains, players, and lock-ins) and outline the vision ecosystem for natural gas/biogas. Jubilo and PBI will carry out the project together. Important stakeholders will include the current and future potential value chain players and regulatory entities (regarding permits, regulation, taxation etc.).

PBI has extensive experience in carrying out ecosystem design projects from the marine, energy, and transport sectors, as well as business case calculations within pre-feasibility studies. Jubilo has implemented a system for recycling biowaste in Finland and has insight and an extensive network for partners for this project.
